Teaching and Learning in harmony with the Mind and Brain
Children learn from almost everything they do, not just while they are in school. Their minds are open to learning all their waking hours, and a teacher or parent can tap into that readiness by providing a safe and secure environment, and by providing resources that are suitable to the child’s age, interests, and culture.
By thinking about the whole environment that a child experiences, a teacher or parent can be in a better position to guide their learning. That environment includes their home life, their culture, their friends, classmates, groups they and their family belong to or identify with, and also their personal characteristics - personality, likes and dislikes, skills, knowledge, and hobbies.
My research is about encouraging teachers and parents to widen their understanding of how children learn, and to apply that understanding to how they treat their children. By learning about how children learn, they will be able to provide experiences that raise children’s interest, motivation, and rate of learning. A child who is safe, secure and motivated to learn is usually a well behaved child, willing to accept boundaries and instruction.
